I bought the yacht as my retirement present in 2010 and renamed it Scube.
My father was an officer in the Union-Castle line from 1917 (age 15) to 1937 and then, when my mother called him home, manager of Bonds Boatyard, Maidenhead, till 1956. Our home on the boatyard, where I was born, was almost underneath the arches of Maidsenhead Bridge and outside was a large ship's bell saved from the Maurentania. Hence the Bonds logo.
Father's full name was Sidney Sutton Smith, SSS, so when as a young man he tried writing poetry he invented a penname from 'S' cubed ... SCUBE
My career as an academic started at Sussex University with a physics degree. I loved research and building equipmment but decided mainstrean physics was too big-scale for me and retrained in physiology at University College London with the aim of understanding brain mechanisms - huh! I finished with a PhD in muscle physiology, partly because Roger Woledge was such a nice guy (as well as very clever) as a superviser.
